Pietro Romanengo fu Stefano brings you a taste of history with their exquisite, handcrafted confections. One of the few companies in the world that has been continuously operated by the same family for more than 200 years, Romanego uses the recipes and techniques passed down through the generations to produce artisan confections. Founded in the second half of the 18th century by Antonio Maria Romanengo, Pietro Romanengo fu Stefano's products are made using the same recipes from centuries ago, and remain true to the traditional Genoese art of candy making.
Although Genoa excelled in candy production as early as the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a number of Parisian confectioners opened shops in the 18th century in Italy's largest towns and cities, including Genoa. The Romanengos were quickly inspired by French ideas and added new products to their existing repertoire of fine candied fruits and sugar-coated dragées.
The Romanengo reputation soon spread beyond Genoa and before long, the company was selling to distinguished members of society including the Duchess of Parma, the Duchess Galliera, Giuseppe Verdi (whose letters on Romanengo's candied fruits are kept in the La Scala museum), and Prince Umberto. The order for Prince Umberto's wedding in 1868 is now kept in the historical archives of the Commune of Genoa and reads as follows: "Candied fruit, demi-sucres, elegant bonbons and small metal bonbonières decorated with pastilles".
Since the late 19th century, Romanengo has been committed to its founding principles of preserving the craftsmanship and traditions of producing artisan confections. Now run by cousins Paolo, Pietro, Giovanni Battista, and Delfina Romanengo, the company employs 24 full-time workers and a number of seasonal staff to produce it's world renowned products using the recipes and techniques passed down through the generations. All items are produced seasonally and more than 2/3 of the inventory is sold in Genoa at Romanengo's own stores, making only a limited amount available for export to Austria , Germany , England , and the USA .
